Dear Friends:
People who have intellectual or developmental disabilities have more than merely a chronic condition…they have a challenge every day. Eating, showering, dressing, brushing teeth and combing hair can be a difficult task needing assistance.
Since its founding almost 40 years ago, Welcome House (and its partnering organizationWest Haven) has provided the focus, direction, and assistance in making the lives of the residents we serve better in every way. Our commitment to our clients is enhanced by our commitment to our staff, the excellence in training, and the on-going education opportunities that we present to them. That training includes practical skills in caring for residents on a day-to-day basis, as well as taking those extra steps to study for a credential and/or a college degree on line.
We provide those opportunities because we have never lost sight of our primary responsibility…providing excellence in care and support to adults with IDD. Ensuring their environment is safe, offering them life-experiences such as vacations, trips to exciting places, and simple pleasures like a bowling league–all within the context of putting those we serve ahead of all other things.
Our reputation for excellence in care continues to spread.
This year, we also branched out to have our first home that assists autistic adults. CuyahogaCountyofficials approached its local provider community and Welcome House sought out one of these new projects because we had the staff, the skill, and the expertise to offer clients with a different set of challenges a fulfilling life. To be honest, the lives of four young men have changed in a most positive way and they are on a road that will provide them a better lifestyle and a stronger connection to their community.
Support and counseling for families is also of primary concern. We work with families during a crisis, providing assistance in care decisions, and accessing necessary resources. Our staff is available to answer questions, keep families informed on trends in services, and assist in making every house a home.
Annually, we ask our friends to help us financially so that we can continue our tradition of excellence in care. Budget cuts at all levels have affected our bottom line, but never our delivery of services. Thankfully, our supporters have provided us with the funding to keep art and music therapy, which builds self-esteem and confidence; with trips to museums and amusement parks, which brings joy into their lives, and the vehicles to take them where they need to go….all of which the budget cuts have eliminated or severely reduced.
Please consider a gift again this year. Your donation provides direct services and needs to our residents, all of which make their lives better. Thank you for your consideration. May your holiday season be warm and your new year successful in every way.
Sincerely,
Nick Alexander
