leapAcademyJoin us for an informative evening to learn more about LEAP Academy, the newest partnership between Welcome House and Linking Employment, Abilities and Potential (LEAP). Come meet the instructors and learn a little more about the class offerings for the first group of LEAP Academy students!

Classes offered in the first session include:

Introduction to Job Preparedness

In this comprehensive introduction to job preparedness, students will learn how to find jobs for which they are qualified, identify their skills, and present their best selves through the application and interview processes. Activities include “unpacking” job descriptions, completing practice applications, developing resumes and cover letters, learning about appropriate professional attire, and engaging in mock interviews

Interpersonal Skills & Communication

This course guides students through understanding interpersonal skills and communication, with an aim to encourage healthy and productive relationships. Students will develop skills to communicate with peers, co-workers, and employers, with an emphasis on appropriate behavior for each scenario. This course covers different types of communication, as well as approaches to conflict resolution, respecting personal boundaries, understanding social cues, interacting with strangers, and identifying unhealthy or abusive relationships. Students will be encouraged to express themselves and listen to their peers through both real and simulated scenarios.

Career & Community Exploration

This course explores a variety of jobs and career options available in the community and helps students to identify fields or opportunities that interest them. Sessions involve group informational interviews that cover job duties, employer expectations, and the joys and challenges of different types of work. Students are given the opportunity to meet visiting professionals in different fields, as well as to tour local facilities (e.g., Mitchell’s Ice Cream, Campell’s Sweets Factory, Great Lakes Brewing Company, etc.)

Routines for Daily Living

Routines are a part of our daily personal and work lives. Learn about how to plan healthy routines for daily living such as exercise, food planning, tips to succeed in the workplace, and money management. Technology will be incorporated into these sessions to encourage students to utilize apps and other assistive technology to enable greater independence and routine management. Sessions will include simple food preparation, exercise basics, and introduction to money management.
